I’m sorry to hear about the issue you are having with what I imagine you expected to be a straightforward install; that’s always frustrating. I’m sure we can help you out, but before we dive in it may be good to establish what we are working with:

Installing El Capitan When you download OS X El Capitan using the Mac App Store, a raw package (.pkg) file is downloaded from the Apple server. This raw file is not installable on its own. While downloading the package, MAS processes and converts it into an executable (.app) file, which can then be installed on your Mac. Download: OS X El Capitan This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. Download OS X El Capitan. The Application Install OS X El Capitan will appear in /Applications. STEP 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive with UniBeast. Take a deep breath and take your time- this is pretty simple, but it's easy to miss things if you rush. Follow each step to the letter. Insert the USB drive. El Capitan disk has an embbed security certificate that has expired in 2016. Just change your system date, let's say to, install El Capitan, then change the date back to today. MacBook Pro 15' Unibody Mid 2009.
1. Were you able to successfully copy your files to the external hard drive as you noted? Do you have any other full or incremental backups of your system from prior to the install, like in Time Machine?

2. What are you seeing when you try to reinstall from Recovery? Is it giving you an error, or is it just hanging/failing? If you are seeing an error, what does it say specifically?
3. Similarly, what are you seeing when you try to verify/repair the disk? Is it saying that the disk is fine, is it finding repairable errors, or is it failing because it cannot repair the disk?
